How the estimate is worked out

The figure above is a benchmark, not a quote. It compares what you currently pay against the range our negotiators typically achieve on comparable policies — same coverage, same carrier where possible. Your actual result depends on your claims history, your state, the age of the policy and how long it has been since anyone challenged the renewal price. In the states that permit it, a credit-based insurance score is in the mix too — the NAIC sets out the limits states place on how those scores may be used, and the rules differ between auto and homeowners.

The largest reductions almost always come from policies that have auto-renewed several years running. Carriers rarely re-rate an existing customer downward on their own, so a policy nobody has questioned since it was written is usually the one carrying the most room.

Where the estimate comes from, in the end, is outcomes. We publish those in the results benchmark — premium before, premium after, and whether coverage was held identical — and read them back quarterly in the Renewal Increase Report. No email, no gate.

What happens after the estimate

Nothing automatic. If the number looks worth pursuing, a negotiator reads your current declarations page and benchmarks it against live rates. We take the market result back to your current carrier first, because retention departments usually discount rather than lose a policy. If another carrier genuinely beats them on identical coverage, we show you both prices side by side and you decide.

You hear back within 24 hours, and nothing on your policy changes without your say-so.

If you would rather do the first round yourself, the other two free tools are the renewal letter generator and the declarations page checklist. Nothing is behind an email address.

What the estimate means for each policy type

Car insurance

The most-renegotiated policy we handle, and usually the one with the most stale information on it: mileage from a commute that ended, a garaging address you moved from, a driver who left years ago. What is actually negotiable on a car policy walks through every lever, including how to pull them yourself.

Home insurance

Home premiums have moved sharply in recent years, and rebuild-cost estimates get carried forward automatically at renewal whether or not they still reflect the property. Deductible structure — especially percentage wind and hail deductibles — is where the arithmetic often turns. See home insurance.

Boat and yacht insurance

A narrower market, which cuts both ways: fewer carriers, but far fewer owners who ever shop it. Navigation limits, lay-up periods and agreed-value versus actual-cash-value hulls move the price more than most owners expect. See boat and yacht insurance.

Private jet insurance

The calculator does not cover jets, because AiM cannot yet quote, bind or negotiate one: the aviation program opens Q3 2026 and the page below is a waitlist. Aviation is also its own market, priced on hull value, pilot hours and operation type rather than on anything a four-question calculator can model. See jet insurance.

Questions about the estimate

How accurate is a car insurance savings calculator?

It is a benchmark, not a quote. This one compares what you pay now against the range our negotiators typically achieve on comparable policies at the same coverage. No calculator anywhere can be exact, because your final premium depends on your motor vehicle record, your claims history, your state, your vehicle and, in the states that permit it, a credit-based insurance score, none of which a four-question form can see.

What do I need to use it?

Roughly what you pay now and what you are insuring. You do not need your policy number, your declarations page or an email address to see the estimate. The declarations page only matters later, if you decide you want the policy actually reviewed.

Why does the estimate depend on how old my policy is?

Because carriers rarely re-rate an existing customer downward on their own. A premium that has auto-renewed for several years without anyone questioning it has usually drifted furthest from what the market would charge today, which is why long-standing policies tend to show the largest room.

Does using the calculator commit me to anything?

No. Nothing is submitted, nothing is charged and nobody calls you because you moved a slider. The estimate is worked out in your browser and you decide whether to go any further.

Will switching to a cheaper policy mean less coverage?

Not if it is done properly. Every comparison worth making holds the limits and deductibles constant on both sides -- a cheaper premium bought by lowering liability is not a saving, it is a transfer of risk to you. If the only way to reach a number is to cut protection, we say so rather than quietly doing it.

What does it cost if I want the policy actually negotiated?

25% of the first-year savings we negotiate, a $149 flat fee where there is no existing premium to negotiate against -- a first car, a newly bought home, a vessel with no cover yet -- and $0 if we find no savings. There is no retainer, no subscription and no card required to start.

Have it checked properly

The estimate is a benchmark. A negotiator reading your actual declarations page is the real answer — free, and with a straight verdict either way.
